To The Entertainer, Billy Joel
There's a yellow rose in Texas
That I am going to see;
No other soldier knows her
No soldier, only me.
She cried so when I left her
It like to broke my heart,
And I'm going to find her—
I know I don't mind her—
She's coming to me,
There's lots of loving to be,
And we're never gonna part.
She's the sweetest little rosebud
This lover ever knew;
Her eyes are bright as diamonds,
They sparkle like the dew.
You can talk about your dearest Mae,
Sing of Rosa Lee,
And your Peggy Sue,
Sweet Caroline too,
But the yellow rose
Beats all of those;
She's the only one for me.
Now I'm going to find her,
For my heart is full of woe,
And we'll sing the songs together
That we sung so long ago;
We'll play the banjo gaily
And we'll sing the songs of yore,
And a few that are new,
Some sweet dancing too;
Our lips'll close,
And the yellow rose
Will be mine forevermore.
In which I improve upon a beloved Texas folk song.
ReplyDeleteI completely love the updated lyrics. However, Hoyt Axton and Billy Joel do not mix, and Axton's voice is the ONLY voice I will ever hear in my mind singing "The Yellow Rose of Texas". Sacrilege it is!
